Intertwined

A collaboration between Nicole Banowetz and the students of Knapp Elementary School.

The pandemic made clear the importance of relationships. The time away from others made us miss our friends, extended family, school communities, etc…  But it also gave us time to recognize toxic relationships.  As we reengage with the world it is important to use this information to inform how we rekindle, sever, or create relationships.  This project uses relationships found in nature to discuss humans relationships with one another.  Nicole collaborated with students discussing the importance of relationships found in nature and in the students life. Each student chose an image from nature and created a fabric cut out.

Nicole sewed all the students pieces onto fabric sculpture. These sculptures were installed on the Weir Gulch walking path near Knapp Elementary. They remained installed for almost one year.

Students also painted their imagery on a sidewalk on the playground at the school.

This project was made possible by the support of the Insite Fund from the Andy Warhol Foundation, Denver Streets Partnership, and Greg Rios of the Denver Public Schools.
